A Quick Guide To Finding Work As A Freelance Copywriter
Copywriting seems to be the buzz word right now. It is hardly surprising given how the majority of folk crave that elusive work/life balance that so many people should be viewing this as the answer to their woes. However, just like money, we all know that work doesn’t grow on trees and neither does it simply fall into your lap. Work generally has to be fought over and then earned. So, in case you were feeling a little unsure here is my quick guide to finding work as a freelance copywriter:
Commit
It really does depend on what your personal goals and aspirations are. However, you need to commit to the following before making the transition into a new career:
- The number of hours that you will be able to invest
- How you are going to handle your accounts and taxes
- Where exactly you are going to work – It is all very well and good saying that you are going to work from home. Whereabouts at home? Do you already have a designated office space? Are you going to do it from the bedroom? Your bedroom?
- When you are going to work – Are you going to write early mornings before you go to the day job? How about evenings? Weekends? Or maybe when the kids are at school.
Yes, this may seem like a lot. However, you do have to take all of the above into consideration before you proceed.
- Do you have the necessary resources to do the job? By that I mean a laptop or PC. (I don’t recommend doing it from a tablet) You will also need a mobile phone – a smartphone is preferable. If you also happen to have Skype then you should find it even easier to secure work as a lot of potential clients want to set up Skype calls before offering you the work.
The next big question that you need to ask yourself is:
How am I going to get the work?
You have several options here. Here’s my top suggestions:
- The big online sites. There are four or five large sites where you should find it relatively easy to set up a profile and register. Once registered you then simply need to start bidding for work
- Word of mouth – This is possibly one of the best ways of securing work. If people know that you are available then the work should come flooding in.
